Houn is a desert town in the middle of Libya about 230 KM south from the coastal town of Sirte. Houn is in the centre of Al Jufrah District, which is consisted of three oases, the other two oases are Waddan to the north and Suknah to the south. Houn is well known to have plenty of underground water and many palm trees, and considered to be the gateway to the real inhabited Libyan southern territories of Sebha, Braak, Merzug and the Aubari fertile valley.
Houn has been known as a migrating town. First, there was Sakin bin Miskan which had disappeared under the sand probably five centuries age, then there was the Old Houn which was surrounded by a wall and towers, some parts of the old town are well preserved up to now. At last there is now the present Modern Houn which has seen in the last two decades a significant development in construction and embraces now some high educational and government institutes and many beautiful villa compounds. The people of Houn – a population now of 19,000 – are known to be quite friendly and famous for their love of handicrafts and arts, music and popular poetry and pursuit of knowledge. The economy in ancient times was based mainly on dates which are the best.
Houn is the theatre in autumn every year of a Cultural and Tourist Festival organized and supported locally by the people of Houn. The following pictures are a result of a visit to Houn last week to attend the festival, the thirteenth this year.
